Windows Media Player 12: Playing Ogg Audio Files

Does Windows Media Player 12 support OGG audio file? I guess no cause there are many cases online that WMP failed to play OGG files:

"I’ve ripped the majority of my music collection in .OGG Vorbis format, and I’ve installed the DirectShow filters and codecs from the website. When I select “Play with Windows Media Player” or “Add to Now Playing List” from the context menu on the containing directory, it only opens Windows Media Player without adding any of the media files."

Why Can’t Windows Media Player 12 Play Ogg Files?

By default Windows Media Player 12 doesn’t support the Ogg Vorbis audio format. In fact, compared to more modern programs like VLC Media Player and Foobar2000, Microsoft’s jukebox program doesn’t support many audio formats out of the box.

This is because it doesn’t have the right codec in order to decode audio which has been compressed with the Vorbis format. So, if you’ve got files ending in .ogg or .oga then WMP 12 won’t know what to do with these. If you’ve already tried playing Ogg Vorbis files, then you’ll probably have seen WMP 12 complain (via a pop up message) that it had a problem — it then promptly refuses to do anything more.

To get Ogg files supported in WMP 12/8/7, you can of course use an alternative media player, but what if you want to stay with WMP 12? How do you get it to play Ogg files? You have two options: 1. install the codec; 2. convert OGG format.

Method 1: Adding Support For Ogg Files

The solution is to install a codec that can decode files in the Ogg Vorbis format. There are plenty of codec packs that you can download and install, but these often add a lot more codecs (including video) on your system than you actually need.

If you just want to add support for Ogg, then all you need to do is use the appropriate DirectShow filter.

Once installed on your computer, Windows Media Player (and any other DirectShow compatible player) will be able to use this filter.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to’s download page.
  2. Look in the Binaries section and download the Open Codec installer. As well as adding support for Ogg Vorbis, this installer also includes codecs for Speex, Theora, FLAC, and WebM too.
  3. Once downloaded, run the opencodecs executable file.
  4. Click Next on the first screen.
  5. Read the license agreement and then click the I Agree button.
  6. Click Next if you are happy with the default destination folder. Alternatively, use the Browse button to choose a different folder.
  7. To install all the codecs in the pack and set up the necessary file associations for WMP, click Next.
  8. Choose a menu start folder from the list, or just click Install to go with the default path.
  9. Wait for the codecs to be installed and then click Finish.
  10. Restart your computer.

Testing Windows Media Player 12 Ogg Playback

  1. When Windows is back up and running, go to the folder on your hard drive where the ogg files are located.
  2. Double-click on a file to test.

If everything is set up correctly, Windows Media Player 12 should automatically run and start playing the Ogg file you selected.

Method 2: Convert OGG to WMP 12 For Playing

A large number of audio conversion software packages exist for converting these OGG to WMP, mp3, or anything else that WMP will play natively. Be aware that converting already compressed files may degrade their quality. Much of the conversion software will require the above codecs to be installed. Conversion may make sense if you ultimately wanting to share your music with devices such as the iPhone that does not support the OGG formats.

Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate is recommended here. With this OGG converter you can convert OGG audio files to a variety of audio formats such as MP3, WMA, FLAC, AAC, AC3, MKA, etc. On the other hand, it also can convert any audio format to OGG files. It can extract OGG files from MP4/MKV/WMV/AVI, etc video, even Blu-ray and DVD movies. Meanwhile, it also can directly rip Blu-ray and DVD to WMA or WMV for WMP and convert video to WMA or WMV for WMP.

Free download and install

Step 1: Add OGG files to the audio converter by clicking "File" at the top of the interface.

Step 2: Choose MWA audio from the "Common Audio" catelog from "Format".

Tips: you can click "Settings" to adjust audio codec, channel, sample rate and bitrate.

Step 3: Press on "Convert" to start to convert OGG files to WMP 12 supported WMA audio.

After the conversion, you can locate the generated WMA audio files in output folder then add the WMA audio files to WMP playlist to enjoy the audio.

Digital Container Formats

Definition of: multimedia container

A digital file format that holds audio, video and subtitles. Containers support a variety of audio and video compression methods and are not tied to one particular audio or video codec. AVI was the first Windows container format, and Matroska/MKV is a popular open source container. MPEG-4, QuickTime and RealMedia are also A/V containers.

The most popular multimedia containers are:

  • AVI (standard Microsoft Windows container).
  • MOV (standard QuickTime container).
  • MP4 (standard container for the MPEG-4 multimedia portfolio).
  • Ogg (standard container for codecs).
  • Matroska (not standard for any codec or system, but it is an open standard).
  • ASF (standard container for Microsoft WMA and WMV).
  • RealMedia (standard container for RealVideo and RealAudio).

The differences between various container formats arise from five main issues:

  • Popularity; how widely supported a container is. This is the reason that the AVI format is still the most popular format.
  • Overhead. This is the difference in file-size between two files with the same content in a different container. For a two-hour film, when in AVI, the file may be up to 10MB larger than when in Matroska.
  • Support for advanced codec functionality. Older formats such as AVI do not support new codec features like B-frames, VBR audio, VFR natively, although the format may be tweaked to add support, creating compatibility problems.
  • Support for advanced content, such as chapters, subtitles, meta-tags, user-data.
  • Support of streaming mediamedia streaming on demand via the Internet.

Format Comparison

 Standard owner Microsoft MPEG Microsoft
B-frames support by tweaks Yes Yes Yes Yes
VBR audio Yes* Yes Yes Yes Yes
Variable frame rate No Yes No Yes No
Chapters No No Yes Yes No
Subtitles No ttxt Ogg Writ Anything No
Streamable No Yes Yes Yes Yes

* ACM cannot handle VBR audio streams in AVI files. Thus, software using ACM (Audio Compression Manager) to read audio from AVI files will not be able to handle VBR audio streams correctly, even though such files are compliant to the AVI file specification. This is a limitation of the ACM, not of the AVI file format.

Container Formats Explanations

Audio-Video Interleave (AVI) is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in 1992, as part of the Video for Windows technology. These files contain both audio and video data in a standard container that allows simultaneous playback. Most AVI files also use the file format extensions developed by the Matrox OpenDML group in February 1996. These files are supported by Microsoft, and are known unofficially as ‘AVI 2.0’.

A QuickTime MOV file contains one or more tracks, each of which store a particular type of data, such as audio, video, effects, or subtitles. Each track in turn contains track media, either the digitally encoded media stream (using a specific codec such as Cinepak, Sorenson codec, MP3, JPEG, DivX, or PNG) or a data reference to the media stored in another file or elsewhere on a network. It also has an ‘edit list’ that indicates what parts of the media to use.

The ability to contain abstract data references for the media data, and the separation of the media data from the media offsets and the track edit lists means that QuickTime is particularly suited for editing, as it is capable of importing and editing in place (without data copying) other formats such as AIFF DV, MP3, MPEG-1, and AVI.

MPEG-4 Part 14 or MP4 is a container file format specified as a part of the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 international standard. It is used to store media types defined by the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group, and can be used to store other media types as well.

MP4 allows streaming over the internet. It also allows multiplexing of multiple video and audio streams in one file, variable frame- and bit-rates, subtitles and still images.

Ogg Media Container is developed by as the framework of a larger initiative aimed at developing a set of components for the coding and decoding of multimedia content which are both freely available and freely re-implementable in software.

The term Ogg often incorrectly refers to the Vorbis audio codec. Other prominent components of Ogg are its video codec Theora, and the speech audio compression format, Speex.

If you are wondering about the OGM format, refer to this page for detailed information. suggests to use the Matroska container, since OGM is no longer developed.

Matroska aims to be the standard for multimedia container formats. It incorporates features you would expect from a modern container format, like:

  • Fast seeking in the file
  • High error recovery
  • Chapter entries
  • Selectable subtitle streams
  • Selectable audio streams
  • Modularly Extendable
  • Streamable over internet (HTTP and RTP audio / video streams)
  • DVD-style menus

The Matroska file extensions are:

  • .mkv: generally video files, as well those containing audio (movies) or video only.
  • .mka: audio only files, can contain any supported audio compresion format, such as MP2, MP3, Vorbis, AAC, AC3, DTS, PCM.
  • .mks: a so called ‘elementary’ matroska stream containing any subtitles stream.

To open Matroska files, you need to install either the DivX Total Pack or the Matroska Pack filter. For extended information regarding the Matroska container format, visit its website.

Advanced Systems Format (formerly Advanced Streaming Format) is Microsoft’s proprietary digital audio and video container format, especially designed for streaming media. ASF is part of the Windows Media framework.

The format does not specify how the video or audio should be encoded, but instead just specifies the structure of the video/audio stream. What this means is that ASF files can be encoded with basically any audio/video codec and still would be in ASF format. This is similar to the function performed by the QuickTime, AVI, or Ogg formats.

The most common filetypes contained within an ASF file are Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Windows Media Video (WMV).

RealMedia is a multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. It is typically used in conjunction with RealVideo and RealAudio compression and is popular for streaming content over the internet.

RM content can be played with RealPlayer, or with any DirectShow based player by installing third party filters such as RealAlternative.

Share DVD & DVD Drives Over the Network on Windows

From ultrabooks to netbooks, computers are shedding their optical drives. If you still use an occasional CD or DVD, you don’t have to buy an external optical drive –  you can share another computer’s optical drive over the network.

The two computers must be on the same local network to share an optical drive. This requires using the Advanced Sharing settings in Windows – there’s no easy, HomeGroup-style way of doing this.

Sharing a Drive

First, open the Computer window (click Start and select Computer) on the computer with the optical drive.

Right-click the drive you want to share, point to Share with and select Advanced Sharing

Click the Advanced Sharing button in the properties window that appears.

In the next window, enable the Share this folder checkbox. Type a descriptive name – such as “CD Drive” – for the share, and then click the Permissions button.

Ensure that the Everyone group has Read access to the drive. If you require additional security – for example, if you’re not using a home network — you can restrict access to specific users. Click OK to save your changes after configuring the permissions.

You may want to disable password-protected sharing to make this easier, assuming you’re on a secure home network. To do so, click the Network and Sharing Center link under Password Protection.

Click the Home or Work header, scroll down, and select Turn off password protected sharing to disable it. Click the Save changes button after you’re done.

After you click the OK button, your drive will be shared on the network. You’ll see its address under Network Path in the properties window.

An icon over the drive indicates that it’s shared. To stop sharing the drive later, go back into its Advanced Sharing window and uncheck the Share this folder checkbox.

Mapping a Drive

On your other computer, open Windows Explorer and click the Network option to view your network.

Browse to the share you created, then right-click it and select Map network drive.

You can specify a drive letter for the shared optical drive and have it automatically become mapped each time you log in.

The mapped drive will appear as its own drive letter in the My Computer window. Double-click the drive, or navigate to it in any application, to access its contents over the network.

Share DVD Movies to Devices/PC Over Network with One DVD Drive

You also can copy DVD to hard drive on PC with DVD Drive and DVD Ripper. Then put the DVD backup onto sharing folder of Plex or NAS, Cloud Storage. Afterwards, you can play DVD movies on your PC, Tablet, Laptop, Netbook, NoteBook, iPad, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Note 7, PS4, Xbox One S, PS4 Pro, etc.

Now saying copy DVDs to hard drive, using DVD rip software is the best way to put DVDs to computer. Then we need to think about the question – how to rip DVDs to hard drive with DVD ripping software? Here we’d like to take Pavtube BDMagic for example to introduce the steps.

Pavtube BDMagic is a top-ranked DVD ripping software that facilitates ripping the content of a DVD to computer hard drive and converting to other popular video formats, such as rip DVD to MP4AVIWMVFLV, MOVMPEG1/2, etc.

It offers powerful yet easy-to-use functions, excellent video/audio quality, and fast ripping speed. This DVD ripping software also has the ability to decrypt DVDs, remove copy preventions, and make disks unrestricted and region-free.

Integrate All Movies to MP4 for Plex Around House Streaming

Plex can organize and manage your media library and allows you stream your movie library throughout your house on iPhone, iPad, PC, TV, Android devices, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S from the sharing folder of Plex. Today, the article shows you how to add movie library to Plex sharing folder including Blu-ray, DVD, 4K, MKV, etc.

Add movies to Plex

Hot Search: Blu-ray to Plex | DVD to Plex | ISO to Plex | MKV to Plex

How to Add Movie Library to Plex?

1. Download and install Plex. Click on the Computer download. Yes, you can also download it to your network-attached storage device if you have one. For this how-to, we’re focusing on the desktop app. Once you’ve grabbed it, install it – there aren’t any complicated settings you have to fuss with. Click the Launch button when you’re done.

Plex download in PC

2. Create a Plex account. You don’t have to have one if you don’t want – just click the “Don’t want an account” link at the somewhat-bottom of the screen, and you’ll be transported to Plex’s actual configuration screen. We recommend you go for it, though; it makes remote streaming much, much easier. Once you’re done, Plex will transport you to the primary configuration screen. Agree to the EULA. You can create one just by entering a username, email address, and other information.

Create Plex account

3. Click the “Already have an account” link to supply your credentials, or create one now.

Get started

4. Name thyself. All you have to do in the next screen is giving your desktop computer a name. By default, it’ll use whatever name you’ve already assigned your desktop PC via Windows. If you’re good with that, click Next.

Name thyself

5. Create your media library by clicking on the Add Section button. Plex will ask you what you’re trying to add – movies, TV shows, music, photos or home movies. It’s ok if you have multiple types of media in a given folder, but it’s pretty easy to use Windows’ standard conventions for storing things (the prebuilt Videos, Pictures, and Music folders that likely already exist on PC).

Add section

Once you’ve selected what you want to add, give the section a name (like “Movies”) and click the Add Folder button to do just that. While Plex scans your media, you can add more folders if you so desire. Once you’re all done, click the big orange Next button to go on.

6. Add Channels, or other third-party sites that you can tap into using a Plex-friendly app, by selecting them on the next screen. Click Install on the pop-up window for each channel to slap it into your Plex server. On the final screen, click Done to jump into the full Plex display.

Add channels

7. You can edit Plex’s default settings by clicking on the wrench and screwdriver icon in the window’s upper-right. By default, you shouldn’t have to play with anything, but you’ll be able to use the Settings menu’s myPlex section to see whether your computer can be found from outside your internal network (in other words, is your port forwarding working). You can also tell Plex how much it should scan the various folders you imported via the Library section. If you want Plex to auto-update every time you drop a new video in your Movies folder, that’s where you’ll find that option.

Plex settings

Finally, under the Plex/Web section (on the top), you can use the Player section on the sidebar to set the quality of your local and remote streams. If your network can support it, go big!

Here a Support – Basic Setup from Plex will be helpful to you, too.

All that is how to add your movie collections to Plex. Well, what’s next?

8. Stream your stuff by tuning into Plex using your favorite DLNA-friendly device. Or, if you prefer, you can also grab the Plex apps for iOS or Android to watch your desktop-based media from your tablets or smart phones.

Stream movie to devices via Plex

Plex can hanle many media formats but the end devices usually have strict limit on video formats. If you plan to play video with Plex on Home Theater, I suggest you’d better integrate your media library to MP4, a generic container which can be played on nearly all devices.

The Best solution for you is to find a third-party tool to make everything easy. Here Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate is one of the options. Her single-disc 6 Weeks to Sculpted packs 14 intermediate to advanced workouts—head-to-toe strengthening, HIIT, plyo and yoga flow—into a training calendar. “I found new muscles to be sore, even after a 10-minute workout,” one reviewer said. Hits the spot—every spot.

Calories burned: 60 (yoga) to 162 (typical 24-minute circuit)

Equipment needed: 3- to 8-pound dumbbells, foam roller (optional)

# 2: The Total Package

In his new P90 DVD set, the supertrainer Tony Horton drops the “X” for an all-levels-welcome version of his wildly popular 90-day program. The 10 workouts—including total-body and core on the floor routines—are mapped out for you in a follow-along schedule. The modification options to the mix of cardio and resistance moves “make every set possible” for a gymlike intensity, testers said, all in 25 minutes. “It doesn’t get much better than that,” one reviewer raved.

Calories burned: 30 (8-minute abs) to 356 (42-minute circuit)

Equipment needed: Pro-grade resistance band with door attachment (included in kit)

# 3: Quickie Pick

Mix-and-match interval training works magic in Natalie Jill’s Rev4 Rev It Up. The four 10-minute routines hit different trouble zones so you can do them as stand-alones—”I definitely felt I got a good workout after each,” one tester said—or combine them for a total-body session. Testers loved that they could “switch things up for time-pressed mornings” and gave props to instructor Jill’s “nice energy.” Expect a variety of planks and booty-shaping moves.

Calories burned: 32 (per workout)

Equipment needed: None

# 4: Raises the Barre

“In the age of extreme everything,” one tester said, the low-impact fat melters in BarreAmped Boot Camp “deliver results in a nonjarring, refreshingly friendly way.” Trim and tone with pliés, lunges and tiny lifts using a set of light weights—and feel the firming magic “working after only a few sessions.” Win–win.

Calories burned: 394 (full 60-minute workout)

Equipment needed: 2- to 5-pound dumbbells, chair

# 5: Middle Manager

The express route to a two-piece starts here: Bikini Body: Absolution. The pair of 20-minute workouts take the burn-and-firm approach to cinching with a cardio-focused session of jumps, squats, lunges and planks, then a toning series of what a reviewer described as “new-to-me ab exercises that kick the typical crunch’s booty.” Get ready for the wood-chopping arabesque move, one tester jokingly warned. So sore but so sleek!

Calories burned: 74 (sculpting) to 170 (cardio)

Equipment needed: 2- to 5-pound dumbbells

# 6: Killer Cardio

Lose yourself in the high-energy rhythm of the Pound Rockout Results System, a five-disc sweatfest in which you wield drumsticks (aka Ripstix) instead of weights. “The drumming takes your mind off your muscles hurting!” one tester marveled. You’ll “constantly tap the sticks” in each routine—core, upper body, lower body, intervals, tune-up and jam session—for a “totally unique” cardio blast.

Calories burned: 254 (per workout)

Equipment needed: Drumsticks (Ripstix included)

# 7: Smash HIIT

“You will never get bored,” said one tester, with the push-yourself workouts in the 21 Day Fix—seven 30-minute sessions ranging from high-intensity cardio-strength circuits to Pilates. Each routine “amps up familiar moves” to crank your calorie burn. Another tester was wowed that “so many different modifications and options were shown to help me switch up my workout.” There’s an included diet plan for those on a mission to trim.

Calories burned: 37 (10-minute abs) to 254 (30-minute circuit)

Equipment needed: Resistance bands or 3- to 12-pound dumbbells

# 8: Most Om-azing

Element 5 Day Yoga offers five 15-minute sequences to pick and choose from based on your mood and motivation. “It’s an easy way to get to the mat every day,” one tester said, whether your body needs a Stretch & Restore session or more of an invigorating Energy & Flexibility set. Plus “the instructor provided just enough guidance, no unnecessary chatter.” Namaste to that.

Calories burned: 40 (per workout)

Equipment needed: Yoga mat

# 9: Lead Dancer

So you think you can’t dance? Now you can—and get “a good cardio workout,” one reviewer said, to boot. You’ll quickly love the hip-hop mix that makes up the 45-minute sesh in Groov3’s Dance Sweat Live. The easy-to-learn choreography is broken down step-by-step for newbies before each sequence, “which allows you to gain confidence in your dancing as if nobody’s watching” but hustles along so that “you’re sweating” by the time you get into the rhythm.

Calories burned: 310

Equipment needed: None

# 10: Hot Momma

Instructor Leah Sarago offers moms-to-be six 15-minute workouts in Fit + Sleek Prenatal Physique. Choose from cardio (think lunge variations with leg and arm lifts), bump-friendly core sessions and upper-body mat exercises. String a few together for a longer workout, or “pick just one if you want to ease up as your pregnancy progresses,” our due-any-day tester suggested.

Calories burned: 40 (stretching) to 79 (cardio sculpt)

Equipment needed: Three sets of dumbbells (light, medium, heavy) from 2 to 8 pounds, yoga mat, chair
