Apple and its business partners began taking orders on Friday for its iPhone 5C, the lower-end of two smartphone models introduced earlier this week, but not without some hiccups.
Pre-orders were set to begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday, but Apple’s online stores weren’t usable until 12:12 a.m. Customers might have had better luck with T-Mobile in Germany and O2 in the United Kingdom, which began presales just after midnight PT.
In the United States, AT&T’s store was taking orders, too, though Sprint and Verizon Wireless still showed only information pages at 12:20 a.m.
The iPhone 5C, whose internals are very similar to the now-discontinued iPhone 5 that arrived last year, costs $99 for the 16GB version and $199 for 32GB with a two-year contract. Customers can place orders online now, but they won’t be delivered until September 20, when the phones also will go on sale in stores.
Apple isn’t offering a preorder option for the iPhone 5S, its new high-end model that starts at $299 and adds new hardware features like a faster A7 processor, fingerprint security system, improved camera, and a speedier processor with an integrated low-power motion tracking chip.
Last year, Apple ran out of its initial online stock of the iPhone 5 in less than an hour, with new buyers facing a two-week ship time. That quickly ramped up to three to four weeks, with many new buyers turning to Apple’s retail stores or carrier partners to get a phone sooner. It then took the company another two months before it was able to shorten the waiting times in early November, just ahead of what turned out to be a busy holiday quarter.
This launch could be Apple’s biggest yet. First, it’s putting two new iPhone models on sale for the first time. Second, both are being released in 11 countries simultaneously on September 20, with a wider release in other regions to follow.
To put any expectations in perspective, last year’s iPhone 5 tallied up two million preorders in the first 24 hours. Apple went on to sell more than 5 million iPhone 5s in its first three days on sale. The year before, more than a million people preordered an iPhone 4S in the first 24 hours, which went on to become around 4 million on its opening sales weekend.
The iPhone 5’s record was not without hiccups. Online stores experienced performance and availability issues almost immediately after opening up for sales. Both Apple and AT&T’s online stores temporarily went down for maintenance, while Sprint experienced slowdowns the first half hour the phone was on sale. Similar issues plagued some International carrier partners, including T-Mobile in Germany, as well as Orange in the U.K.
Along with the new iPhones, Apple is introducing a handful of new accessories, including color cases.
Apple started selling its lower-end new smartphone, the iPhone 5C, with an expected delivery date of September 20. That’s the day the phone will be available in stores.
Apple is gearing up to start iPhone 5S production later this month as part of a plan to make 15 million of the devices, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said in a note Monday morning.
The latest speculation about the iPhone 5S — which remains the fodder of rumor and expectation, as Apple has kept mum on such a product thus far — draws from Misek’s conclusions from inventory channel checks.
Based on the checks, he said he believes small-batch production of a low-cost iPhone began last month, and manufacture of the iPhone 5S will begin later in July. He estimated availability would be in late September or early October, based on the lead time he thinks the device requires.
He estimates the mix is 15 million each of the low-cost iPhone and iPhone 5S, with the iPhone 4S being retired.
The iPhone 5S has a history at the rumor mill. Pictures in December showed an exterior identical to the iPhone 5, just a couple of months off the launch of the iPhone 5. Other pictures surfaced last month. More recently, a Korean news outlet expected a version of the iPhone 5S with LTE-Advanced technology.
Misek has a track record of some misses, too, including about imminent launches of an Apple TV set last year, which did not pan out.
This article is where we take a look at some of the rumoured iPad 5 release dates and specs and try and makes some sense of it all.
iPad 5 release date
Following the announcement of iOS 7, it’s fairly easy to come to the conclusion that Apple will launch the iPad 5 in autumn 2013. The company released the iPad 4 back in November 2012, having unveiled it in October. Given that the design was already two-generations old, we can’t imagine Apple will wait any longer than a year to launch the next iPad.
Apple’s 24th annual developers conference kicks off next week, and will be the company’s first event in more than seven months.
The conference lasts the entire week, but the highlight is Monday’s keynote address, where Apple typically announces new products and services. This year, Apple has only said it will give developers new versions of iOS and OS X software, though there’s likely to be a surprise or two.
Expectations are high, in no small part because it’s been so long since Apple has released anything new. Its last big product launch was the iPad Mini in October, and the months since then have contained little besides tweaks to some existing products. The company has also attempted to temper expectations in the lead up to WWDC, saying there are “amazing” things, but that they were coming in the fall, and throughout next year.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few things to look forward to at next week’s conference. We’ve rounded up some of the top rumors going into the show, as well as our own expectations.
Apple has already said it will be showing off new versions of iOS and OS X, though the software will almost certainly be only for developers to test before either is released to the public. In the past there has been a several months-long delay between when developers first get new software, and when it’s released to the public.
As a frame of reference from last year: OS X Mountain Lion went out as a developer preview in February, and was released as a finished product near the end of July. iOS 6 went out as a developer preview at WWDC in June, and was released to everyone else in late September. Apple patched bugs and added a few more features along the way.
iOS 7 is expected as a follow-up to iOS 6, which first debuted at last year’s WWDC. There’s been much rumbling about a complete visual overhaul led by Apple’s top designer Jony Ive, a detail that was confirmed by CEO Tim Cook in an interview last week. Impressively, few details of new features and functionality have leaked out ahead of Apple’s reveal. Here are some of the big ones:
- New interface — A report from 9to5Mac in April, as well as the New York Times in October suggested Apple was changing the design to do away with many longstanding visual features of iOS. 9to5Mac’s report, in particular, suggested Apple would keep the functionality of iOS apps and features the same, but lose some of the digital facsimiles of real world objects in favor of simpler designs. A purportedly leaked shot of the new look cropped up earlier this week (pictured above).
- More gestures — Also from the 9to5Mac report, Apple was said to be looking into additional ways to access basic information with gestures, similar to what it currently uses with a one-finger swipe to bring up Notification Center, and a four-finger swipe on the iPad to pull up the multitasking menu.
- More sharing tools – Once again from 9to5Mac is a report Apple plans to add its AirDrop file-sharing service, which is built into OS X, into iOS so that users can swap files with one another if they’re on the same Wi-Fi network. The blog also adds that Apple intends to build in system-level integration to send media to Flickr and Vimeo.
- More Yahoo — An April report from The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) says Apple and Yahoo are working together to bring more of Yahoo’s content and services to Apple’s devices. That includes more content from Yahoo’s sports and news sites.
After a lapse of two weeks, Apple’s iTunes upgrade again, now iTunes has been updated to version 11.0.4.
Middle of last month, Apple released iTunes 11.0.3 update brings a new design of Mini player and other features improvements such as Songs View. After a lapse of two weeks, Apple’s iTunes again today for the upgrade, now iTunes has been updated to version 11.0.4.
And different from the previous update, 11.0.4 update is focused on bug fixes, at least so far not revealed any new features. According to the update log, this update fixes the most obvious is a result in the switch wired or wireless synchronization occurs when iTunes is forced back loopholes. In addition, a cause users to repeatedly log the iTunes Store vulnerability has also been fixed.
At present, the updates are already available through the Mac App Store “Software Updates” feature to download.
There are four more days Apple WWDC conference will be held in 2013, according to previous reports we know that in this conference, we will usher in Apple’s latest iOS 7 operating system. iOS 7 system is in charge of Apple’s design department boss Jonathan apple HMI Human Interface (HI) sector since the surrender of the first operations, allegedly there will be great changes, iTunes does not know whether it will therefore be changed ? Stay tuned!
If you are an Apple fan, you might often concerned about the trend from Apple. There is no doubt, almost every Apple device will bring a series of the boom. Nowadays, many people are turning to the next generation of Apple mobile devices, such as iPad 5, iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S. According to a report from Taipei-based Digitimes., production of the fifth-generation iPad is slated to begin in July. The following are details:
Trial production of Apple’s 5th-generation 9.7-inch iPad will begin soon and volume production will begin in July, with monthly shipments ramping up to 2-3 million units in September, according to sources with Taiwan’s supply chain.
The display of the new iPad, which will hit market shelves as early as September, will still be a 2,048 x 1,536 Retina display, the same as the one used in the 4th-generation model, except that the new display is built on a glass substrate of 0.2mm, thinner than the 0.25mm one for the 4th-generation device, the sources said, adding the new table will has a narrow bezel.
The touch panel solution for 5th-generation iPad is GF2 (1 layer of glass and two layers of ITO film) instead of G/G bonding used in 4th-generation iPad, the sources added.
The new iPad will use one LED light bar for backlighting, compared to two LED light bars used in 4th-generation iPad, the sources noted.
The 5th-generation iPad is estimated to be 25-33% lighter than the 4th-generation one, the sources indicated.
LG Display, Samsung Display and Sharp are expected to be the suppliers of display panels for the 5th-generation iPad, while Taiwan Surface Mounting Technology will undertake SMT for the LED light bars, Radiant Opto-Electronics and Coretronic will be responsible for making the backlight units and TPK Holding for touch panel bonding, the sources said.
Believe it or not, we are sure that Apple iPad 5 is coming soon. If you have other information about iPad 5, do share it with us in comments.
