5 Confirmed iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3 Specs & Features on Q3 2014 Release Date

It will be an earlier release date for the iPad Air 2 and the third iPad Mini version as popular Apple-focused analyst Ming-chi Kuo forecasted the next iOS slate refresh to happen in the third quarter of 2014, at the earliest.

In his latest research note, picked up last week by MacRumors, the KGI Securities analyst outlined the fresh specs and features that will get unpack with the sixth regular iPad build.

Kuo also corrected his earlier prediction about the iPad Mini – that a third generation is on its way this year and will join the iPad Air 2. Apple, he added, will unveil these devices anytime starting in July with the actual release date to take place not later than September 2014.

Coming out of the box with the Air 2 and Mini 3 are the five specs and features below that Kuo believes are virtually confirmed, pointing to his credible supply chain sources in Asia:

A8 CPU

The iPhone 6 will flex its muscles powered by the 64-bit A8 processing chip and the same powerhouse will fire up both the Air 2 and the Mini 3, Kuo reported. The jump from A7 chip architecture is almost automatic, he added, and should deliver the following benefits – better overall performance, enhanced graphic rendering and more efficient device energy use.

iOS 8

Apple devices, at least most of them, now stand on iOS 7.1 and its unimaginable that the same mobile platform will animate the 2014 batch. So Apple fans are counting on the arrival of iOS 8 with the latest iPads and according to experts, the same software will be previewed at the 2014 WWDC in June.

Working with A8 chip, iOS 8 will be responsible for high-octane mobile computing, better stability and device security in the upcoming iPads.

8MP sensor plus killer cam features

Both the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3 will be the scaled up iPhone versions in terms of camera shooting capabilities, Kuo predicted. He expects the tablet duo to wield a killer 8MP rear cam plus the usual servings that iPhone fans have been pampered with.

The main object is to allow iPad users to produce high-quality clips and images comparable to that of the iPhone camera capabilities.

Touch ID

Touch ID fingerprint scanner makes for a tougher security protocol in the iPhone 5S and the same feature, Kuo asserts, will debut this 2014 in the two iPads. If that will be the case, Apple will again lead the way as the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 will become the first tablets to feature biometric security.

Same look, design language and price

Outward, there is not much to expect from the already gorgeous looking iPads, Kuo said, adding that most of the tablet upgrades are confined within. If anything, it will be the Mini 3 that could get a bit of a revision as the analyst noted that the bulkier Mini 2 proved unattractive for many iPad fans.

So the same beautiful and solid design seen in 2013 will be pretty carried over in the 2014 builds, said the KGI expert.

And the same goes for the pricing – $400 for the basic iPad Mini 3 and $500 for the iPad Air 2. As the price mark stays the same, Kuo is upbeat of upcoming treats for tablet shoppers – cheaper 2013 iPads with the Mini 2 likely to go for only $300 soon as the Mini 3 becomes available.

It will be a simultaneous release date for the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3, which Kuo said should be expected anytime in July through September 2014.

Google Nexus 8 Release Date Rumors: The Chronological Story

The next Google I/O event is closing in fast, and as is the case each and every year, the search engine giant is expected to unveil some new hardware during the event. So what can we expect to see during the next conference? Well, judging by what the latest rumors are claiming, we’re most likely going to witness the unveiling of the Nexus 8 tablet.

But, nothing is set in stone yet, so let’s backtrack a bit and discuss the Nexus 8 release date rumors that have been circulated during these past several weeks. More on that one after the break.

Google Nexus 8 Release Date Rumors – The Story So Far

Given the fact that Google usually follows a certain pattern when it comes to launching new devices, it’s pretty much a no-brainer to assume that, if the Nexus 8 is real and is meant as a replacement for the Nexus 7, then the slate should be unveiled in mid-2014. This theory has been initially reconfirmed by the online publication Digitimes.

Not long after that, the same publication has suggested that Google intends on releasing the Nexus 8 at the end of April, but this seemed a bit too far-fetched to be real. Then, Digitimes has yet again cited its “inside sources”, and claimedclaiming that the Nexus 8 will enter mass production in June (so the April launch is out of the question) – the same month during which the Google I/O conference will take place.

What has followed then, was “confirmation” from numerous tech blogs, that the Nexus 8 is indeed planned for a July or August release, following the June production time-frame. The slate was also further rumored to bemanufactured by HTC, and not by LG or Asus.

The bottom line is, while we can’t be sure of how the story with the Nexus 8 will eventually end, we can be somewhat certain that the slate will go on sale shortly after the Google I/O event (if the N8 is real to begin with) simply because that’s what common sense dictates at this point in time. Hopefully, with the press conference closing in, all will become clearer. Stick around and we’ll keep you posted.

Sony Xperia Z2 make an official appearance at CES 2014

2 Thoughts

Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile might be getting ready for the unveiling of a new smartphone in the Xperia Z lineup as soon as the next month, the latest reports on the matter suggest.

Rumor has it that it could be set to unveil the handset at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 in Las Vegas in early January, though it might not put it on shelves until March.

The smartphone, called Xperia Z2, should make an official appearance at CES 2014, Technos Amigos notes in a recent report, and it should also be showcased at MWC 2014 in Barcelona the next month.

Furthermore, the news site claims that Sony also plans the launch of multiple smartphones at CES, and that two of them will be codenamed Sirius and Canopus (Xperia Z2 was rumored a few months ago to be codenamed Avatar).

Nothing has been confirmed on the matter as of now but, considering the fact that Sony did launch Xperia Z at CES this year, it would not come as a surprise if it did a similar move with the upcoming handset.

Xperia Z2 is expected to go official with a 5.2-inch touchscreen display (possibly an IGZO-matrix one), as well as with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor inside. Furthermore, it should run under Android 4.4 KitKat right from the start.

Other specs of the smartphone include 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, a 20-megapixel camera on the back, 3MP front camera, and a powerful battery inside.

We’ll take the info with a grain of salt for the time being, but we’ll keep an eye out for additional details on the matter, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, you might also want to learn the fact that the aforementioned Sony handset codenamed Sirius is expected to hit the market with a 5-inch screen and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 CPU inside sometime in the second quarter of the next year.

The first Nexus 5 cases have already popped up

The latest hubbub is that our first official glimpse of Android KitKat and a Nexus 5 smartphone could be just days away now. This gossip is further bolstered by the fact that the first third-party cases for the Nexus 5 have been spotted on Google+.

sns_nexus5

South Korea’s Spigen, which makes a variety of mobile accessories including a pretty spiffy case for the iPhone 5S designed to complement the new gold model, started sharing images of its “neo hybrid” case for the Nexus 5.

There’s no release date or any other real details on the case or phone, just a shot of the back of a case on what pretty clearly seems to be the Nexus 5 that we’ve been seeing in leaks recently.

Those leaks have painted a pretty clear picture of what to expect from the Nexus 5 — basically a spiffy take on the LG G2 with near top-flight specs, pure Android 4.4 KitKat, and an unlocked price tag that could be as low as $299. We should know more next week. Stay tuned, and please, wipe that drool off your chin.

Apple and allies begin sales of iPhone 5C

Apple and its business partners began taking orders on Friday for its iPhone 5C, the lower-end of two smartphone models introduced earlier this week, but not without some hiccups.

Pre-orders were set to begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday, but Apple’s online stores weren’t usable until 12:12 a.m. Customers might have had better luck with T-Mobile in Germany and O2 in the United Kingdom, which began presales just after midnight PT.

In the United States, AT&T’s store was taking orders, too, though Sprint and Verizon Wireless still showed only information pages at 12:20 a.m.

The iPhone 5C, whose internals are very similar to the now-discontinued iPhone 5 that arrived last year, costs $99 for the 16GB version and $199 for 32GB with a two-year contract. Customers can place orders online now, but they won’t be delivered until September 20, when the phones also will go on sale in stores.

Apple isn’t offering a preorder option for the iPhone 5S, its new high-end model that starts at $299 and adds new hardware features like a faster A7 processor, fingerprint security system, improved camera, and a speedier processor with an integrated low-power motion tracking chip.

Last year, Apple ran out of its initial online stock of the iPhone 5 in less than an hour, with new buyers facing a two-week ship time. That quickly ramped up to three to four weeks, with many new buyers turning to Apple’s retail stores or carrier partners to get a phone sooner. It then took the company another two months before it was able to shorten the waiting times in early November, just ahead of what turned out to be a busy holiday quarter.

This launch could be Apple’s biggest yet. First, it’s putting two new iPhone models on sale for the first time. Second, both are being released in 11 countries simultaneously on September 20, with a wider release in other regions to follow.

To put any expectations in perspective, last year’s iPhone 5 tallied up two million preorders in the first 24 hours. Apple went on to sell more than 5 million iPhone 5s in its first three days on sale. The year before, more than a million people preordered an iPhone 4S in the first 24 hours, which went on to become around 4 million on its opening sales weekend.

The iPhone 5’s record was not without hiccups. Online stores experienced performance and availability issues almost immediately after opening up for sales. Both Apple and AT&T’s online stores temporarily went down for maintenance, while Sprint experienced slowdowns the first half hour the phone was on sale. Similar issues plagued some International carrier partners, including T-Mobile in Germany, as well as Orange in the U.K.

Along with the new iPhones, Apple is introducing a handful of new accessories, including color cases.

iPhone-5c

Apple started selling its lower-end new smartphone, the iPhone 5C, with an expected delivery date of September 20. That’s the day the phone will be available in stores.
