Rip and Copy DVD to HDD

A hard disk drive (HDD) is a data storage device that uses magnetic storage to store and retrieve digital information using one or more rigid rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. So if you want to copy your large DVD collections on PC but don’t want to take up the hard drive space, you can choose to copy DVD to HDD. Here’s how to do it in Windows 8 and Windows 10 , but the steps are much the same in all versions of Windows.

Why Choose HDD to Store DVD Backups?

* Enthusiast multimedia users and heavy downloaders: Video collectors need space, and you can only get to 4TB of space cheaply with hard drives.

* Budget buyers: Ditto. Plenty of cheap space. SSDs are too expensive for $500 PC buyers.

* Graphic arts and engineering professionals: Video and photo editors wear out storage by overuse. Replacing a 1TB hard drive will be cheaper than replacing a 500GB SSD.

* General users: General users are a toss-up. Folks who prefer to download their media files locally will still need a hard drive with more capacity. But if you mostly stream your music and videos online, then buying a smaller SSD for the same money will give you a better experience.

How to Rip DVD to HDD?

Generally, we say rip DVDs to HDD, not copy DVDs to HDD. Why? Almost all DVD movies are encrypted with CSS copy protection. Decryption keys are stored in the normally inaccessible lead-in area of the disc. You’ll usually get an error if you try to copy the contents of an encrypted DVD to a hard drive. However, if you have used a software player to play the movie, it will have authenticated the disc in the drive, allowing you to copy without error, while the encryption keys will not be copied. If you try to play the copied VOB files, the decoder will request the keys from the DVD-ROM drive and you will fail to copy with an error message “Cannot play copy-protected files”. So you need a professional yet DVD to HDD Ripper.

A DVD Ripping Tool – You can rip unprotected DVDs to HDD with Handbrake but for commercial DVDs, you have to turn to a professional DVD ripping tool to remove the copy protection. If you don’t mind all the DVD rips are MKV files, you can use MakeMKV. But I prefer Pavtube ByteCopy for its DVD (and Blu-ray) decryption power. It supports to decrypt AACS, BD+ up to v61 while MakeMKV only supports up to v60. And ByteCopy can 1:1 backup DVD movies, main title copy DVDs and convert DVD to lossless MKV, Multi-track MP4/AVI/MOV, SD/HD MKV, MP4, WMV, AVI, 3GP, 3D SBS MKV/MP4, H.265 MKV/MP4, 4K MP4, etc. For more functions, you can refer to its review.

DVD discs – It depends on what DVD ripping software you choose. If you choose Handbrake, your DVDs should be unprotected. If you are using ByteCopy, you can copy any DVD to External Hard Drive like the new released House Of Cards, HannibalThe WalkSpectre 007The Martian, Game of Thrones Complete Seasons (1-6), etc.

A Computer – Note: If you are using a Mac, you shoulf use Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac.

Start to Copy DVD to HDD

Firstly, please download and install your DVD ripping tool:

Step 1: Run DVD ripping tool and insert your DVD to internal/external drive and click “File” to load the DVD discs to copy DVD to External Hard Drive. DVD discs, DVD folders, DVD IFO/ISO are all supported.

1.You can add more than one DVD movies at a time for its batch conversion function.

2. You can choose desired subtitle and audio track and forced subtitle below the chapter list.

Step 2. Click the “Browse” button to set output folder where you want to save the copied DVD movies.

Step 3. Hit the Copy the entire disc icon on the main interface and start Gravity DVD backing up process.

Alternatively, you are suggested to choose “Common Video -> H.264 MP4 Video (*.mp4)” for putting DVD to an external drive for playback.

Now coping Gravity DVD to an external hard drive, hard disk drive (HDD) or thumb drive is extremely easy. Have a try now!

If you’d like to copy only movie content and leave out the extras and commentary, the Directly Copy is exactly what you need, which copies intact .M2TS/VOB main movie from original DVD disc without extras.

Step 4. Finally click on “Convert” button to start converting DVD to HDD for streaming and playing.

When the conversion finished, you can enjoy you DVD collection from HDD.

H.265 (HEVC) & H.264 (AVC) Direct Play in Plex Media Server

HEVC is a successor to the well known H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression standard. HEVC promises the same level of picture quality as H.264/AVC, however, there will be better compression so the file size can be smaller. This is important when dealing with 4K or UHD media. As the resolution increases, the file size increases along with it. Although there are now few devices supporting HEVC, Plex won’t let you down ever with supporting both H.264/AVC and HEVC/H.265 direct playing.

Plex Direct Play Video Support

Native video support is typically (but not always) limited to the MP4 container, H.264 video encoding, and AAC audio. Content that is not natively supported will automatically be Direct Streamed or transcoded as needed by the Plex Media Server.

Learn >> ISO to Plex | MKV to Plex  | TV Series DVD to Plex | AVI to Plex | Blu-ray to Plex

See the Specific Model Differences later in the article for more information about cases that may vary from this. Content matching the following can usually be Direct Played:

  • Container: MP4
  • Resolution: 1920×1080 or smaller
  • Video Encoding: H.264 (level 4.0 or lower)
  • Video Framerate: 30fps
  • Video Bit Depth: 8
  • Audio Encoding: AAC

Plex 4K (UHD) Direct Play Video Support

Some 4K (ultra high definition) devices are recognized by the Plex app. We’re working to bring 4K playback support to other devices, too. 4K/UHD content matching the following will Direct Play on supported devices:

  • Container: MP4
  • Resolution: 3840×2160 or smaller
  • Video Encoding: HEVC (H.265)
  • Video Frame Rate: 30fps
  • Video Bit Depth: 8

4K content not matching the above properties will be transcoded to 1080p. Transcoding 4K content is a very intensive process and will require a powerful computer running Plex Media Server.

Rapid Encode Video to H.265 Using GeForce GTX 900 Series with NVIDIA HEVC Encoder

" I have been waiting a long time for Plex to be able to support HEVC. But alas, encoding a movie in x265 took 3 days to encode on my 8 core 32GB computer. I have a video card (GeForce GTX 960) that supports hardware encoding, but I was unable to find software to support the encoding."

Now, there is a new version of Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate (trialware) that supports Nvidia H.265, Nvidia H.264 and Intel H.264 hardware encoding as well as other common encoders. You can now encode a 1.5 hour 1080p video in HEVC in about 20 minutes.  And the quality will be very good and am very impressed. If you have a Nvidia video card that supports H.265 encoding (Kepler), you might want to check it out. H.264 hardware encoding is supported on many of the older Nvidia cards. To use NVIDIA HEVC hardware encoding, you have to have the appropriate hardware. You can see if your Graphics Card supports NVIDIA HEVC CUDA acceleration here.

Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate v4.9.0.0 and higher version support the most advanced hardware acceleration NVIDIA CUDA & AMD APP by H.264/H.265 codec, which can give users 30x video transcoding speed than before. Pavtube ByteCopy vs HandBrake 1.0.0: Best DVD Ripper Showdown

Handbrake 1.0.0  is a very capable DVD Ripper and while it’s not the only option out there, it’s one of the best. But that could soon change. A new DVD ripping utility (Windows only) is putting a spin on many of Handbrake’s best features — and the results aren’t half bad, either.

Pavtube ByteCopy. Today we’re going to see how it stacks up to Handbrake, and whether it’s worth your time.  Now let’s do DVD ripper review and make comparison of these two DVD conversion programs in terms of input/output supports, DVD ripping speed, user interface, etc. to see which DVD ripper is better.

HandBrake vs Pavtube ByteCopy: Features

Pavtube ByteCopy is a stand-alone DVD ripping software for Windows 10. It is more professional and concentrated on ripping DVD to other video formats including MP4, WMV, MOV, FLV, MPEG, or DVD to iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, Android, PSP supported videos at fast speed. What’s more, it is a scarce DVD ripping tool that can copy DVD to lossless/uncompressed MKV container with the title, languages of the audio streams, subtitle or caption tracks, fonts for those subtitles, images, chapter information, and menus. It also can convert DVD to multi-track MP4 with multiple subtitle and audio tracks.

HandBrake is an open source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded DVD ripper or video transcoder, available for Windows, Linux or Mac OS X. The latest version HandBrake 1.0.0 was released on Dec 24, 2016. It means, besides DVD ripping, it can also decode and encode videos.

HandBrake vs Pavtube ByteCopy: Speed

Of course, Handbrake is known for being fast but Pavtube ByteCopy is superior. Fortunately, the results from both are similar. Handbrake was able to rip and encode a 90-minute film using a single pass of h.264 in just over 40 minutes on our test machine. The results were particularly interesting because Pavtube ByteCopy uses CUDA — GPU-based encoding — to decrease rendering time.

With Pavtube ByteCopy, you can rip Blu-ray and DVD to H.265/HEVC MP4 and MKV up to 30x times speed using Nvidia GPU hardware acceleration and convert Blu-ray and DVD to H.264 MP4, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, TS, MOV, M4V, etc by up to 500% speed with NVIDIA CUDA acceleration than the same action with no acceleration. Learn more about Pavtube ByteCopy HEVC Encode Utilizing NVIDIA GPU Acceleration

In a word, Pavtube ByteCopy is much faster than HandBrake in movie loading, title scanning, riping, etc.

HandBrake vs Pavtube ByteCopy: Input

HandBrake: DVD (DVD5, DVD9, DVD ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW; only rip non-protected DVDs, not even CSS encrypted DVDs), Blu-ray (Blu-ray disc structure), video file, video folder

Note: It does not support decryption, and needs third-party software like VLC to help remove copy-protection from commercial DVDs. Learn install libdvdcss for Handbrake ripping DVD

Pavtube ByteCopy: DVD 5, DVD 9, DVD ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD folder. Rip any DVDs with region code, CSS, Sony ARccOS, UOPs, APS, RCE, etc. It also can decrypt Blu-ray decrypted by AACS, BD+, MKB V61, MKB V62, etc.

Note: The software can rip commercial and general copy-protection DVDs and Blu-rays independently without the assistance of any other tool.

HandBrake vs Pavtube ByteCopy: Output

HandBrake: MP4 file, MKV file (Container); Universal device presets, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV (2/3), Android, Android Tablet,

Note: Handbrake produces an MPEG-4 file which is compatible with a wide range of media players. But it defaults the output file extension as M4V not MP4.

Pavtube ByteCopy: MP4, H.265/HEVC, MPEG, H.264, WMV, FLV, MOV, TS, 4K video, 3D MP4, 3D MKV, 3D WMV, PS4 Pro, Xbox ONE S, iPod, iPhone , Apple TV, HTC, Samsung, etc.

Click on “Format” bar, select “VCD/DVD/SVCD” from the list and find in submenu DVD formats of NTSC and PAL form. Both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios are available. Here you are advised to select 720*480 DVD format of 4:3 aspect ratio, as the MTS is a typical HD video format and usually contains 1920*1080 or 1280*720 video contents in 16:9 aspect ratio. Using 4:3 aspect ratio may lead to stretched image. Optional output formats are MPG, AVI, WMV, etc. When set output folder, you can either type in save path in “Output” box or click the icon folder and browse to the destination folder.

This “NTSC” and “PAL” are two different standards for different regions.

NTSC mostly for north America, Japan, Korea, Canada, Philippines.

PAL mostly for Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa.

If you choose the wrong standard, then the DVD you created may not be well played by your DVD player.

Detailed settings:

1. Eliminate the interlacing lines: click “Editor” menu, switch to “Effect” and check the box of “Deinterlacing” when your source MTS or MTS files are interlaced 1080i or 720i videos.

2. Adjust output file size and video quality: click “Settings” button and adjust video and audio bitrate. If the files exceed 4.7 gigabytes (DVD 5), then they are too large for the DVD. Otherwise you can improve the video quality by setting higher bit rate. Note that the video and audio bit rate should not be greater than that of original MTS files.

3. Trim out unwanted frames: click “Editor” menu, switch to “Trim” tab, plays the video, click “[” to set start time and “]” to set end time. The duration will be preserved and other part will be trimmed out. By trimming you can cut out unwanted part and remain only desired frames.
